Going underground is a growing trend for UK property owners.

Last year, planning applications for basements increased in London by 11%, and in the South East by 9%. It’s no coincidence that these areas are home to some of the most expensive properties in the UK, with the average house price in London hovering around £600,000.

So what happens if you want more space but can’t afford – or perhaps don’t even want to – move? The answer lies at your feet – dig down!

Basements offer some exciting possibilities for all sorts of spaces, from underground swimming pools and walk-in wine cellars to basement media rooms and bars. Here are our top five ideas for underground living…

Go open plan

One of the key basement trends for 2018 is open plan living. Your basement excavation could potentially open up a huge floor space, and even extend out under the garden giving you one mega room to play with. Create the perfect entertaining space with modern kitchen, huge family dining table and sofa area – you’ll soon find that even the kids will want to hang out with you too!

Create an in-law suite

The awkward question of where do we put the in-laws can be solved in an instant by creating what is dubbed ‘an in-law suite’. That’s right, give them a glamorous bedroom, ensuite bathroom and even a little lounge area, and everyone will thank you!

Make a music room

So your son has taken up drums, your daughter’s found her vocals and you’ve recently resurrected your primary school-grade piano playing – that’s the kind of noise no-one wants to hear on a daily basis. Create a sound-proof room in the basement for all your musical needs and spare the rest of the family from the torture!

Have a home cinema

Nothing beats a good film but it can be so difficult – and costly – to get to the cinema to watch all the new movies. So, we say, bring the cinema to you! With a state of the art projector, sound and lighting, all you need are cinema-style seats and a popcorn machine for evenings of big screen bliss.

Join the underground spa

Nothing says luxury more than having your own spa or gym under your home. Shake off the stress of the day with your favourite exercise machines, sweat it out in the sauna or wet room and wash away any worries in your very own basement swimming pool. No membership required!
